Penso timeline

Founded in 2005 to deliver specialist engineering design and development projects for the automotive industry. Penso has grown into a vertically integrated engineering business offering design and manufacturing solutions across the transport sector.


Consulting Business founded following a management buy-in of P+Z Engineering Ltd. Offering specialist FEA simulation services to the local automotive OEM’s Penso quickly grows a strong engineering team, and wins its first aerospace design contracts. Penso achieves ISO9001.


Penso strengthens its CAD offering with more CATIA seats, and moves premises to Warwick Science Park. The new facility boasts a manufacturing space, and Penso wins its first low volume manufacturing work – an automotive interior for the Brink Carver One vehicle. The project is won as a turnkey provision – design, simulation and manufacture.

Penso win a large number of composite simulation projects in the aerospace and motorsports industries following the creation of bespoke simulation software.

2006 image


Penso wins its second large turnkey automotive project – the design and conversion of a taxi for Fiat Professional. Penso uses its OEM design skills to add quality and reduce costs of the conversion, whilst securing its first European Type Approval. Penso undertakes the conversion of the vehicles internally, delivering 600 vehicles to the customer. Penso acquires an automotive electronics company and an automotive trim company and integrates them into the business.

2007 image


Penso wins a project to develop a Mercedes Taxi for London. A large turnkey programme which involves the design and development of a four-wheel steering system. Penso deliver the programme with full European Type Approval and manages all the development and legal testing. Penso win the contract to manufacture the vehicle and in doing so moves to a larger facility in Woodhams Road (Coventry) to complete the work.

Penso wins a turnkey full vehicle project from Spyker to develop the Aileron. Full vehicle packaging, design and simulation alongside full interior trim development and simulation and the design and engineering of a convertible roof system.

2009 image


Penso win our first rail project, developing a carbon fibre autonomous rapid transit monorail pod. The automotive market begins to accelerate and Penso wins several contracts from local OEMs.

2010 image


Penso strengthen its turnkey offering by undertaking several full vehicle programs, including the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, Range Rover long wheelbase, Jaguar F-Type model revisions, and the C-X75 composite hypercar. Penso also begins a grant funded programme to develop an affordable lightweight composite body structure alongside JLR, named the VARCITY program.

2011 image


Penso continues to deliver full vehicle programs and makes several prototype vehicles. In doing so Penso grows its machining and prototyping capability. Packaging Bucks, Ergonomic Bucks, Styling Cubes, Show Cars and driving attribute demonstrator vehicles are built for our customers. These included the composite body structures, interior and exterior systems for the Jaguar C-X75.

Penso demonstrates its Hot Compression Moulding capability by forming some of the panels in the C-X75 structure.

2012 image


Penso upgrades its quality accreditation to the more comprehensive TS16949 automotive system. The consulting business continues to grow and Penso supports the production launch of the long wheelbase Range Rover.

2013 image


Penso win another rail contract to design a composite rail door for the London Underground system, which saves over 1000kg per train. More turnkey engineering programmes are undertaken, including the Jaguar XF long wheelbase for the Chinese market.

Penso design and supply bespoke seating to the Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge at Hong Kong airport, in partnership with Foster and Partners.

2014 image


Penso manufacture bespoke composite components for the Jaguar Project Seven vehicle amongst others. Initial packaging work and structural layout work commences on the Jaguar I-Pace vehicle amongst others.

Penso create prototype carbon fibre train doors, and demonstrate Hot Compression Moulding of sandwich structures, making the entire door leaf in a single strike.

2015 image


Taxi manufacture continues and the new VS20 platform is developed for Mercedes Benz. Several thousand taxis are now in the market. The composite train door passes stringent smoke and toxicity testing necessary for qualification in the London Underground System. Penso demonstrates the durability of the door by out-performing the specified durability requirement by 25%. Penso are awarded a defence consultancy programme. Penso also begin a collaboration with Solvay to develop automotive specific composite materials.

2016 image


Penso begin serial supply of composite components on a JIT basis to local OEMs. Several composite R&D projects begin in the automotive market based around the idea of affordable carbon fibre body structures. Penso manufacture short runs of body structures which are built into complete vehicle and subjected to full vehicle crash testing in the UK and Germany. Further refinement of composite material data models which improve correlation of the simulation models to physical tests. Penso signs a partnership agreement with Ferrari S.p.A. for the design and manufacture of structural composites.

2017 image


Penso complete the construction of its Body Assembly Hall, a facility which is designed to produce composite structures through automated assembly. Penso commence work on the design of light weight commercial airline seats, and lightweight commercial vehicle structures.

2018 image


Penso begin production of lightweight aircraft seats at a rate of more than 1,000 per month. Penso start the installation of an automated robot assembly line for the production of light weight commercial vehicle structures. Penso win its first contract to produce commercial vehicle structures which are to be delivered in early 2020.

2019 image


Penso successfully launch the Blue Ocean delivery Pod by supplying an initial fleet of Grocery delivery vehicles to ASDA and then a significant quantity of white goods delivery vehicles to Our customers are confirming that the vehicles give significant benefits in terms of payload and fuel consumption.
