PENSO : Recent Non-Confidential Projects
Thwaites planed to install and trial 2 new engine variants in 4 vehicles, moving from mechanical to electronically controlled engines. As a result new engine harnesses had to be developed to interface existing dash panels and new electronic control units in addition to extra LED indicators.
Penso Electronics was involved in development and production supply of prototype wire harnesses for a range of new engines. We developed new schematics with new features provided by the new engine electronics.
Subsequently our team developed harness drawings based on the new wiring schematics and built four wiring harness sets to support prototype vehicles.
A new competitor for British, traditional, black cab has emerged. Mercedes- Benz Vito Taxi is an excellent alternative to both drivers and customers who appreciate comfort, reliability and safety.
Comfort is one of the crucial aspects, thus, the Vito Taxi is equipped with independent air conditioning for driver and passenger, optional leather seats and electrically-powered sliding doors. There is space for six passengers as well as decent luggage space and roomy driver cabin.
Penso plays an important role in the Vito Taxi manufacture. We are responsible for second stage production Vito Taxi while adhering to strict regulations, for example, Conditions of Fitness set by PCO. Yet, our manufacturing and electrical teams have manufactured over 1,000 cars in our state-of-the-art facilities.
The LTS collaborative project commenced April 2009 and culminated in April 2010. LTS aimed to investigate the potential of high-grade steel tubing in the construction of lightweight vehicles as a replacement for mild steel alternatives.
With the broad objectives of investigating weight savings and potential manufacturing process improvements obtainable from the application of high grade butted steel tubing, the project also sought to understand the cost implications and business model surrounding the application of such materials.
Dave Roche, technical Director of Penso Technologies said
“ The Westfield project was a real world project which we were able to develop new designs to maximise opportunities and apply our analytical; knowledge to recommend materials to provide the optimal mix of materials in component and chassis design, potentially combining high strength steels with more traditional lower cost materials.”
The project culminated with an examination into the effect of high strength steel tubing on the crashworthiness of chassis structures. Innovation was supported through the application of new materials and construction techniques currently applied in the bicycle market to automotive vehicle structures and suspension components.
Results were disseminated on the HDTI (21/04/2010) attended by 28 NVN companies & showcased at the Goodwood Festival of Speed July 1-4 2010 and Low Carbon Vehicle 2010 at Millbrook, Sept 15-16 2010 .
Given the opportunities of weight saving and increased chassis stiffness, the final results were a 15% saving in weight and 15% improvement in chassis stiffness!
Also involved in the project at the Niche Vehicle Network were the collaborative partners Westfield Sportscars, Reynolds Tubing and Delta Motorsport.
The Spyker C8 Aileron presented at Pebble Peach was the first prototype for the open-top model, engineered and developed by Penso and is scheduled to go into production in 2011.
Dave Roche, Technical Director, commented:
” We supported the C8 Aileron Spyder throughout the whole development process. Both vehicle variants of the C8 Aileron, the Coupe and Cabriolet, were great project to be involved on”.
He continued, “We supported all the vehicles complete development and designed the cabriolets roof system as well as the show car`s interior for the prestigious launch at Pebble Peach”.
Daniel Hurcombe, Managing Director, said:
“We were delighted to be asked to support such a luxurious product. At Penso, we pride ourselves in taking on tough and challenging projects. We obtained nomination only a few weeks before the vehicle was due to shown at Pebble Beach. Our team, worked round the clock to deliver one of the most luxurious and prestigious vehicles I have ever seen”. “Not only is the C8 Aileron Spyder a superb looking vehicle, its one which truly demonstrated our core engineering competence”.
Spyker has a big advantage with the C8 Aileron Spyder. The C8 Aileron was designed from the outset to be a convertible, so in essence the C8 Aileron Coupe is in fact a Spyder with a roof. Therefore, there are no design compromises or weight penalties.
The C8 Aileron Spyder`s interior is the usual glorious and quirky Spyker-fest of quilted leather and turned aluminum all of which was designed, developed and supplied by Penso from UK based facility in Coventry.
